History & Heritage
The history and heritage of Churchill, Manitoba never seems to find an end. It is rich and deep, dating back thousands of years. Starting with the first explorers, developing with the fur traders and flourishing in the Cold War, Churchill's history is an integral part of Canada's.
Churchill has a very unique culture. Through the passing of time the Inuit, Dene and Cree have brought their art, craftsmanship, music and traditions to Churchill. The richness of this place comes from the people, their language and their way of life.
We are not only the "Polar Bear Capital of the World", but also the "Beluga Whale Capital of World". These play a large part in how our culture developed as well.
Churchill, Manitoba's wildlife viewing is second to none! With as many as 1000 polar bears in our population and the Hudson Bay bubbling with 4000 belugas, it's hard to believe it gets better. But it does, with over 270 species of birds, Churchill is a birder's paradise. We also have the trio of foxes: red, silver and arctic, to make for an array of colour. Other wildlife viewing opportunities might include caribou, wolverine, arctic hare, wolves and seals.
